And the receptionist commenting to herself about said lunch orders is even more extraneous. Is that lunch order important to the story? Does it affect something that happens down the line? Like say the character gets food poisoning or causes an epiphany that the protagonist was allergic to nuts and that's why whatever happened, happened? No? Then it's not needed. I also don't need to know what a character ordered for lunch - every time he orders lunch. There wasn't a bomb set to explode at that second there was no importance to that day. I don't give a damn if it was 8:35 am on Tuesday, July 12, 2014. Say it was during the usual morning crush. Want to be more descriptive? Use early or late. Say your character arrived at the coffee shop the next morning. I don't need to be told the time down to the second. I don't need legal terms explained to me ad nauseum (if there's something I'm curious about, that's what google is for). There were parts felt like they were written for a law school text book. The problem is that all that was covered up with tedious, banal, unnecessary details and comments and plenty of grammatical issues. The premise, the set up and even the who, what, where, when were if maybe a little predictable, still decent possible story. Two stars because somewhere in those 140 pages there were some good story bones. If you are looking for a good legal mystery, I recommend this book. There weren't any problems that made the story hard to understand but just a lot of either extra words or wrong words that were irritating. I really don't like it when they feel the need to hide information that would be good for someone else to know, especially in a legal sense.

I liked that the dialogue among them brought out many of the story twists. It turned out that many of the characters were both! Ryan's friends and co-workers where terrific additions to this story.

At times it was hard to remember who was a good guy and who was a bad guy. It was very fast paced so I had to focus on the story so I didn't miss anything. I really liked this well written legal mystery. He gets a case that nobody else will take and believes he will lose, especially when he sees he is trying it against a very successful lawyer. He doesn't get many cases so takes anything that comes along. Ryan Croker is a new lawyer who opens his own practice since most legal firms are laying off employees or closing their doors so he can't get a job anywhere.
